Cascade Air Systems for SCBA & Breathing Air Fill Stations
A cascade system is a bank of high-pressure cylinders connected in series, used to efficiently fill SCBA bottles without requiring a compressor to run continuously. Fire departments, industrial facilities, and dive shops all rely on cascade systems to fill breathing air cylinders quickly, even during high-demand periods like emergency response or busy fill days. North Shore Compressor supplies cascade system components and fill station support to help you build or maintain a reliable, efficient fill setup.
How a Cascade System Works
A compressor first fills each cylinder in the cascade bank to its maximum rated pressure. When it's time to fill an SCBA bottle, you draw air from the lowest-pressure cylinder first, then move to the next cylinder in the sequence, using the pressure differential between cylinders to maximize fill efficiency. This staged approach reduces compressor run time, lowers wear on your equipment, and extends the life of your fill station. To determine the right fill sequence for your specific cylinder pressures, see our Cascade Fill Chart.
Cascade System Components We Supply
- High-pressure cylinders — UN/DOT approved storage bottles built for safe, long-term high-pressure air storage.
- Manifold assemblies — connect multiple cylinders into a single, organized cascade bank.
- Isolation valves — allow individual cylinders to be shut off for maintenance or hydrostatic testing without taking the whole system offline.
- Fill hoses — rated for high-pressure breathing air transfer between the cascade bank and SCBA bottles.
- Pressure gauges — monitor cylinder and line pressure throughout the fill process.
- CGA fittings — standardized connections that ensure secure, leak-free links between components.
- Pressure relief valves — protect cylinders and lines from over-pressurization.
- Cascade racks and frames — securely mount and organize cylinders for safe, space-efficient storage.
Cascade Fill Chart
A cascade fill chart helps you determine the optimal fill sequence based on your cascade cylinder pressures and the target SCBA bottle pressure. Using the chart correctly ensures you get the most air transfer per fill while minimizing unnecessary compressor cycling. Download our Cascade Fill Chart (PDF) to keep at your fill station as a quick reference for your team.
SCBA Fill Station Integration
Cascade systems can be run as a standalone, compressor-fed setup or integrated directly with a new compressor for continuous top-off and redundancy. If you're planning a new installation, pair your cascade system with our new SCBA fill stations for a complete, reliable breathing air solution. North Shore Compressor builds fill stations right here in Superior, WI, and can help design a cascade setup sized to your department's or facility's daily fill demands.
Compressor Fill Speed Reference
Use this chart to estimate how long it takes each compressor size to fill a single storage bottle at rated pressure. Times include automatic drain cycles that fire every 20 minutes and the time needed for pressure to recover before filling resumes.
| Compressor | CFM | 4500 PSI Bottle (437.1 cu ft) |
5000 PSI Bottle (472 cu ft) |
6000 PSI Bottle (510.5 cu ft) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 HP | 6 CFM | ~80 min | ~86 min | ~95 min |
| 7.5 HP | 8 CFM | ~60 min | ~64 min | ~71 min |
| 10 HP | 14 CFM | ~34 min | ~36 min | ~39 min |
| 15 HP | 18 CFM | ~27 min | ~29 min | ~31 min |
| 20 HP | 24 CFM | ~18 min | ~20 min | ~24 min |
Fill times are approximate and assume filling from empty to rated pressure. Actual times may vary based on ambient conditions, inlet pressure, and compressor efficiency.
Storage Bottle Specifications
We currently have 4500 PSI and 6000 PSI UN storage cylinders in stock for shipping. The price of the storage bottle includes the cylinder valve. We can mount your cylinders on your truck or trailer, against a wall, or on a stand.

Technical Information
These are UN Pressure Receptacles. These cylinders meet or exceed DOT standards and are DOT qualified. A key advantage: they only need to be hydro tested every 10 years. We can also supply you with a regulator, a fill hose, and an adapter to attach to your SCBA or SCUBA equipment.
